Humbled and honored

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.

– Nelson Mandela

Dear Friend,

Thank you for the privilege of representing you in the Maryland Senate for another four years.  As your senator and as Chair of the Judicial Proceedings Committee, I have focused on creating a more equitable civil and criminal justice system and on expanding opportunity for every Marylander. I look forward to carrying on that work with our historic state-wide team, Wes Moore (Governor-elect), Aruna Miller (Lieutenant Governor-elect), Anthony Brown (Attorney General-elect), and Brooke Lierman (Comptroller-elect).

This was in many ways a profound election in Maryland. For the first time in our state’s history, each statewide constitutional office did not have an incumbent running for reelection. It is also the first time in our history we elected African Americans as Governor and Attorney General, a woman as Comptroller, and an Asian American as Lieutenant Governor.

As we head into this new season it is important to note that if we’ve learned anything over these past few years, it is that Democracy is fragile. While the pace of progress can be frustrating at times; from voting rights to Dobbs and Bruen, many of us have never experienced setbacks on such scale. Leaders matter and in Maryland you have sent a clear message that we care about public safety, bodily autonomy, the environment, and economic opportunity for all.

I can’t wait to get to work with these amazing leaders to move our state forward!

Thank you for your activism. Thank you for your commitment to Democracy. Thank you for your vote and thank you for your support!

All the best,

Will Smith

State Senator

Chairman, Judicial Proceedings Committee
